Enburi is a folk art of Hachinohe, the largest city in eastern Aomori Prefecture in the Tōhoku region, and an important asset of the subtle folk culture of Japan. Enburi as a festival is celebrated not only in Hachinohe but also in nearby towns and its purpose is to pray for a good harvest in the coming year. It was created as a dance meant to instruct peasants how to cultivate their land. The dancers who are referred to as ‘Tayuu’ wear horse head shaped hats, which are called ‘eboshii’. Tayuu while dancing move their heads in a way as if they were sowing seeds and planting rice. The Enburi festival falls on February 17-20, and marks the official end of the lengthy, severe winter.
